On these pages are also printed with background sketches of more natural settings, including traditional Japanese houses.
I absolutely loooove your reviews!!! I think they're so insighful and fun to read and watch!! I've been trying to order a few of the art books from amazon jp! But I can't seem to get past the login page. When I try to login they say that my password is incorrect which I know for a fact is not true-
You ask me a lot about which book as are my favorite or what books you should buy for studying. I explained a little bit about my way of using books for learning (giving a few examples of books) in this video. Here are a few examples of good books to use as reference material, especially if you aim for an art style similar to mine:
The Art of the Wind Rises ジアートオブ 風立ちぬ (ジブリTHE ARTシリーズ) This is just an example of the THE ART series of art books published by Studio Ghibli. All of them are great reference material, especially that they contain a ton of various content from sketches, concept arts, character designs, backgrounds, etc. If you can get the ones written in English, there is also a lot of precious knowledge in the texts explaining the reasoning behind all of the visuals. Some of the books are only in Japanese, but I recommend them too if only for the illustrations.
The Electric State エレクトリックステイト This art book contains a lot of beautiful digital illustrations connected by a coherent story. I recommend it for anyone who wants an excellent example of the "cinematic look" used in paintings for building atmosphere and the feeling of movement.
Though Amazon doesn't have any preview pages for the two art books you can get a visual overview of what is in them from ParkaBlogs ( run by Teoh Yi Chie )who has a review and video flick-through for each:-Book 1: oga-kazuo-art-collection-1Book 2: oga-kazuo-art-collection-2
Damian and Matt, thanks! I've updated the links at the end to include the DVD and the Parkablogs review.Pierre, thanks for passing on the word to your Facebook friends. If anyone can find links for the vessels Kurt is looking for, please let me know and I'll add that too. Also for the paper that Janet is asking about.Jacob, I would guess so. They look quite opaque, but kind of like a liquid gouache. I used Cartoon Color to paint backgrounds, which is like a liquid acrylic, very opaque (It's what they used to paint the cels).Daroo, yes, good point. When I visited John Berkey at his studio in Minnesota, he was using casein paint that he mixed himself, with a little acrylic binder. Very opaque stuff which he kept in jars.
