Turbo Boost Switcher along with the computer grounded to a power strip from Supra (with filtration & is shielded) is my best solution to reduce electromagnetic field around my workspace. With turbo boost off, the spikes on the mains are reduced to a minimum which has as much effect as the grounding. Hope this software also will support boost for GPU in the future.
Turbo Boost Switcher For Mac
Thanks for the app.I use the pro version. I use it cool down my MacBook Pro when using Chromecast. Using Chromecast will trigger hyper boost and set the speed fans to high speed. It seems like your app did the trick and lowered the temperatures about 10-20 degrees celsius.
I had a 2016 MBP 2,9 GHz up to 4,0 GHz (turbo boost). Usually, while processing models, the speed went almost 4,0 GHz. That is, turbo boost worked fine and I was very satisfied with the Apple's notebook.
Last month, I decided to migrate to a new 2017 MBP 3,1 GHz up to 4,1 GHz. I thought that I would get a little bit increase of performance. But, unfortunatelly, the performance decreased. Why? Processing the same models, the speed now is up to 3,0 GHz. That is, turbo boost doesn't work!
However the "boost" speed is depended on several factors and it is also theoretical. It is not uncommon for a CPU with a boost speed several decimal points above the base speed to reach one or two decimal points at maximum, there are additional limits with laptops as well; for example inadequate stock cooling may contribute to a throttling back on a boost to where the increase is relatively small, or nonexistent. Or boot may be prevented it all together when operating off battery power.
Hi JimmyCMPIT, thank you very much for your answer. The energy on my Win 10 is set to performance mode. When I bought a new MBP 2017 3,1 GHz up to 4,1 GHz, I looked foward to get a better performance compared with my old MBP 2014 2,9 GHz up to 4,0 GHz. I made a several tests processing huge numerical models, making/linking .NET programs in parallel, but the older MBP 2014 is always faster, especially when turbo boost on. I will try to contact Apple or other Windows forum too. Regards.
It is totally possible to watch turbo boost happening and totally control it from 1ghz to 4.1ghz in small increments, both up and down. Apple has totally locked out this capability, as they want to state 10 hours battery life, which is deceit.
Hi james, i downloaded turboboost switcher and it wasnt enabled, the mac runs fine until a certain time. I think this is because this macbook has been tampered with because it was owned by someonr else before. (I bought of cex)
And the numbers themselves represent increments of 100 MHz by which the power is boosted. Hence, in the above example of a Turbo Ratio of 6589, the clock speed can be increased by a maximum of up to 900 MHz. So If you have a Mac has a clock speed of 1.6 GHz, it may be boosted to a total of up to 1.6 GHz + 900 MHz = 2.5 GHz.
After nearly 2 years of operation, the Macbook's heat output became worrying. The external display plays a role in my workspace, as well as turbo-boost triggered from apps. The problem is not new, many ideas and solutions are provided online. Read on to learn more.
The Macbook Pro 16 2019 is based on Intel x86 CPUs. When looking up the specs for the Core i7 version, it unveils 14nm for the chip. The planned 10nm had to be postponed, and is not available in the Macbook. The 2019 Macbook therefore got better fans to address heat concerns. Intel uses Turboboost to overclock the processor, 2.6GHz boosted to 4.5GHz. This drains more power and produces more heat, and it could negatively influence the behaviour of the external monitor temperature problem.
Thus far, I've only used the suggested Turboboost Switcher for monitoring the temperature and fan speed. I'm hesitant in changing OS settings on the kernel level which may break future upgrades. Let's see if there are alternatives.
Low power mode also disables Intel's Turboboost, avoiding higher frequencies and thus temperature and energy usage. The "Radeon High Side" power usage is reduced to 5W when an external display is connected too. Users on Reddit report it working; I've just tried it and will monitor its behaviour.
Continuous overheating is not an option, making hardware failure more possible in the future. My daily operations with Chrome, Slack, Zoom can easily trigger the CPU Turboboost with a browser tab consuming one CPU core, thus kernel_task coming to prevent overheating. Most of my resource intense workflows run somewhere in the cloud already. I'll continue to monitor the low energy mode to see if it helps, and update this blog post in case.
An unspoken feature request for macOS - allow to disable Intel's Turboboost, separated from limiting the AMD GPU power consumption. The latter probably is a software bug, hard to nail down. I'm guessing one more reason for Apple to invest into own hardware design with the M1 processor unifying CPU and GPU, and benefit from their own platform in the long term.
Control the overheating of Mac devices with the default Turbo Boost feature. Access the default configuration and disable the option to return the device to regular functionality, thus easing the load on the CPU and other hardware elements. Re-enable the boost at any time.
The actual developer of this free Mac application is Rubén García Pérez. Turbo_boost_switcher_v1.0.zip is the most frequent filename for this application's installer. You can set up this free program on Mac OS X 10.6 or later. The most popular version of the application is 1.0.
if i didnt like rack so much i probably would have given up trying to solve the heat issues already and honestly i was regretting the eGPU purchase but now with the turbo boost switcher keeping the CPU temps down and the eGPU keeping the GPU temps at bay it ended up reducing a majority of the heat so it all worked out.
